[Preliminary Entry] Padmāwat is a popular Indian story with both lyrical and historical themes, that Malik Muḥammad Jāyasī (d. 999/ 1591) versified in Awadhi language in 947/1540-41 during the reign of Šīr Šāh Sūrī (r. 1540 -1545). Rat Padam is the first Persian translation of the Indian Padmāwat and was realized by Mullā ‘Abd al-Šakūr Bazmī (d. 1662-1663) in 1619. It includes two parts: the former part recounts the love story of Ratan Sin and Padmāwatī, and the latter focuses on the historical event of Sultan ‘Alā’ al-Dīn Ḫaljī’s conquering Chittoor Castle. Some historians disagree on the second part of the book and they doubt if the love story happened for ‘Alā’ al-Dīn Ḫaljī or Ġīyāṯ al-Dīn Ḫaljī, as Tārīḫ-i Firišta is the only historical source that mentions the passion of ‘Allā’ al-Din Ḫaljī for Padmāwatī (Ṣīddīqī 1999, p. 163)
Bazmī’s Rat Padam is composed of 3014 couplets in maṯnawī style. His translation has opened doors to other Persian versions of Padmāvat such as Šam’ wa Parwāna of ‘Āqil Ḫān Rāzī, Faraḥ-baḫš of Lachhman Rām and Hingāma-yi ‘Išq of Munšī Ānand Rām Muḫliṣ.
